Micro Lesson Introduction
I am creating a series of short English lessons to address common problems, and to talk about
some less well known facts about the English Language. My email address is always at the bottom, so
you will know how to contact me if you have any questions. Below is a small guide to how I write
these lessons.
BE: words in all capital letters refer to the base form of a verb or other type of word. Frequently in the
USA we mark an infinitive verb form by using “to.” It would look like “to be.” I have decided not to
do that here because there are many times when the infinitive form of a verb does not use “to.”
FRIEND is the base form of a noun that could be modified like this: friendly, friendliest, friendlier,
unfriendly, etc.
EN: this refers to a past participle. This comes from the fact that a number of past participles in English
end in “en.” For example, seen, eaten, chosen, hidden, been, and many others.
Words in italics are examples. I really enjoyed the show last night. This means that “really enjoyed” is
an example of what I was discussing.
I sometimes use quotation marks when I am talking about a word or group of words. This is what I just
did above with “really enjoyed.” It is not an example, but highlighting the word or group of words I'm
talking about.
A star, *, marks an error. It would look like this:
*I very like that.
This means “I very like that” is wrong.
I may add to this list as questions arise.
